(Horny) Ways of Seeing by K. T. Kobel

But John Berger never got to see Patricia Arquette in Lost Highway.

For the longest time I was boxed in as another “horny artist.” (Content wise anyway. My own desires are a given.) It went so far that I was approached by a platform dealing exclusively in erotic art. I think that was the point when I began to reassess where I was as an artist. I had never thought especially hard about what I was painting. It was all very intuitive. I would pursue a theme or motif until it became clear to me.

But if we distill the repeated visual motifs, yes, there was lace, latex, high heels, cropped bodies. I understood how you could get there, but whether they were right is another matter entirely.

I’ve never been completely convinced the paintings were especially erotic. I’d always maintained there was a lot more nuance in the work, obviously. This for me felt like a tell on the part of the viewer.
